Speed Test

Run an independent speed test of your internet connection.

For the most accurate result: use a laptop or desktop connected to your router with an Ethernet cable, pause other downloads and streaming, and run the test 3 times back-to-back. Wi-Fi tests on phones routinely under-report actual service speed.

Each of these opens in a new tab. Cloudflare is our go-to because it’s ad-free, privacy-respecting, and shows you jitter and packet loss — not just download speed.

Recommended

Cloudflare

Privacy-respecting, ad-free. Shows detailed metrics including download, upload, latency, jitter, and packet loss. Our recommended test.

Fast.com

Netflix's minimalist speed test. Measures real-world streaming throughput from Netflix's own CDN. Good sanity check.

Ookla Speedtest

The classic. Picks the closest server automatically. Shows ping, download and upload separately. Heavier on ads.

Interpreting the result

MetricWhat it meansGood value
DownloadHow fast data comes to you — streaming, browsing, downloads.Within 10% of your plan’s typical evening speed
UploadHow fast data goes out — video calls, cloud backup, uploading files.Within 15% of your plan’s typical evening speed
Latency / pingTime for data to travel round-trip. Matters for gaming and VoIP.< 20ms from most Australian cities
JitterVariation in latency. Matters for VoIP and live video.< 5ms

Why your speed might be lower than expected

  • Wi-Fi over a distance. Most modern Wi-Fi halves in throughput every wall and ~5m of distance.
  • Older devices. A laptop with Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) will cap out around 100Mbps regardless of your plan.
  • Congestion. Between 7pm and 11pm, the nbn® network hits peak load. Typical evening speeds account for this.
  • Your router. Cheap or old routers can bottleneck a 250+ Mbps plan. Contact us if you suspect this.
  • Access technology. FTTN and Fixed Wireless can’t always deliver the highest speed tiers.

Still not getting what you’re paying for?

Centrefit customers on a Premium or higher plan who are consistently receiving significantly lower typical evening speeds than their CIS advertises are entitled to:

  • A free troubleshooting session with our technical team.
  • Move to a lower-priced plan at no cost, effective immediately.
  • Cancel the service without any early-termination fee.

Call (07) 3188 5115 or email support@centrefit.com.au to discuss. See the CIS for your plan for typical speed commitments.
